Meet the Makers: Artists & Crafters Coming to Cincinnati!

Meet Heidi Black from Electric Abyss...

I am Heidi Black an award-winning comic artist and illustrator who focuses on traditional media, including watercolor and resin. My art can be described as "glitter, gay, and bad puns." I know I wanted to become an artist was when the Lion King came out and I wanted to become a Disney animator. Unfortunately, about the time I hit college (2004), Disney had switched to 3D animation, which I had no interest in, so I chose the next most time-consuming art discipline, comics.

This will be my first show with Avant Garde Art & Craft Show. I'm largely inspired by the works of other artists and storytellers - video games, comics, anime, music, and so forth. I'm good at art is because I do it consistently, with a focus on learning from my mistakes, for 30-some years now.

Meet Shelly from Verdant Home & Co...

I am Shelly, a former corporate girlie who stepped away to pursue something more meaningful: creating a healthier home and environment for my family. Small changes at home grew into a larger purpose.

This mission to make our space safer and more eco-conscious led me to craft non-toxic products I trusted around our kids and pets- and I soon realized others were seeking the same peace of mind.
Driven by a perfectionist's attention to detail, a deep commitment to quality, and a passion for science, O create every product with care to meet high standards of safety, effectiveness, and sustainability. And because I believe safe, natural products should be accessible to everyone, affordability is at the heart of what I do.

Meet Jennifer from Mark Of Lily llc...
I formerly worked as an esthetician, then a 2016 move prompted me to change paths. I've been making cold process soap for over 15 years and it's a labor of love that grew into a business 5 years ago that expanded into candles as well. My personal favorite soaps to use are my all natural bars but having an artistic outlet in my artisanal soaps has made me grow and pushed me to try exciting techniques and grow my artistry.

This is our first time participating in the Avant Garde Art & Craft Shows and we couldn't be more excited. We hope you can make time to come out and see our products.

Meet Veronica North from True Imagine Treasures...
I am a disabled, neurodivergent artist, a bonus mom of two, a partner to my wonderful boyfriend Chris, and a loving daughter, sister, and aunt. I create wire and mixed-media functional art and sculptures, home/office decor, jewelry, and accessories, many featuring wire-writing, my specialty. Bringing my creative ideas to fruition is an important part of my life. I've been creating jewelry and mixed-media art since 1997. This will be my first show with Avant Garde Art & Craft Shows.
My goal is to create art that will communicate emotion and even create a sense of belonging -- of being heard and understood, especially for others who suffer disabling chronic pain, chronic illness, mental illness, and disability of any kind. I aim to create pieces that evoke a variety of emotions, including joy, empowerment, peacefulness, love, amusement, self-acceptance, and belongingness. Throughout college I continued to create jewelry and mixed-media art. I created my first wire sculpture in 2001.

My process begins with a spark of inspiration in response to an emotion -- something I feel personally or empathetically in response to another person. The sparks happen as I go through life, and I feel moved to create in response to them. Words that describe emotion are the basis for much of what I create. Once I decide on a general idea for a piece, I jot it down in a sketchbook.

Spotlight: Amazing Handmade Cincinnati Businesses!

Meet Ethel (Penny) Rainey from Mia's Mixed Media...
My name is Ethel but everyone calls me Penny with the exception of my grandchildren, they call me Mia. I'm a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and a great friend. By nature I’m a quiet person but very passionate about the things I love. I have been employed by the state of Ohio for over 31 years with most of those years working in a civilian role at the highway patrol. I've only been doing mixed media for about 4 years and I am growing and loving it more each and every day.

This Spring will be my first Avant-Garde show I will participate in but hopefully not my last. I'm mostly inspired to create by colors or moods (emotions). When I see something beautiful or interesting my mind always goes to how I can turn it into a painting or art.

I got into mixed media unfortunately out of the loss of my oldest son Kyal. It was a way to focus my mind on something other than grief and a way to turn "ashes to beauty". I just started putting colors together on canvas then giving the finished product to someone that was grieving in their own way. It would make them smile and ease their pain a little. I still do this and it gives me a somewhat of creating with a purpose.

I didn't even know I could do anything like this, I was watching videos on YouTube and I thought I can try this. Little did I know I would grow to love it, after all I couldn't even draw. I just kept practicing, experimenting and spending tons of money on materials lol, but it helped. I took an online course in a Swipe technique and the rest is history!

My creative process is a little strange, at least I think it is to other people. I always start with color thinking what I want to make or paint, do I want it as a painting or a color on a vase or both. Then I picture the lines and angles, how I want it to flow. What materials do I choose how do I lay it all out. I do this all normally while standing still like I'm day dreaming but that's how I normally come up with my next project. I see it mentally first then I try to bring it to life.
I see myself in 5 years, since I will be retired, just spending more time creating. Traveling doing shows and fine tuning my craft.

The message behind my work is that each and every piece I create was done intentionally, not to sell or make a profit but to create something colorful and in my opinion beautiful  that can bring a smile to someone's face or spark a positive conversation. That it's true that sometimes beauty can come from ashes.

Meet Micheal Crawford from The Fresh Pot Mobile...

My name is Michael Crawford, you can call me Chef Mikey C or the sauce man. I am a passionate chef/artist in the hospitality industry with a Bachelors degree in Hospitality Management. I have been an entrepreneur since 2018 and this will be my first time (of many) showcasing my product at Avant Garde craft shows!

I was inspired in my younger years by Emerald the popular Italian chef which led me to where I am today. The possibilities of where I can take my bussiness is limitless which inspires me everyday to work hard on my passion.

Getting into my craft hobby  started out when I realized I needed to simplify my approach to entrepreneurship. I wanted to do something that was easy to me but still showed off my passion and skill in the craft.

In the past I worked various cooking jobs and discovered I had a talent after being able to pick up the skills of each job fairly quickly. This lead me to applying those skills to my own brand, my bussiness among other aspects of my life.

My creative process is simple. I go for what I know works and follow industry trends while keeping my personal touch obvious in my products. I sample food from many different cultures along with drinks, sauces, gravy and more. This helps me by sparking the creative part of my mind. I also study cooking shows, including competition shows. watching people on the shows being forced to think quickly on their feet and trust their instincts helps me get into the same mindset while I undergo my creative process.

In five years I see my brand of quality products growing large enough to allow me the opportunity to travel around the world. Setting up pop-up events from my food/sauce trailer and sharing my products with many different communities.

The Messaging behind my products is simple, a repeated concept in my business, do what you love and find ways for that love and passion to never die out. Believe in yourself. Something that may seem small can become large if you put the work and time into it and let it grow.

Meet Emily Vitori from Syreene Studios...

My husband and I have been Cincinnati residents for over twenty years, with him as a graphic designer and photographer, and me as an art teacher. Now that he is retired and I am working in the banking industry, we both continue our love of the arts by making crafts at home for friends and individual commissions, and have decided to try and expand by joining the art festival circuit.

My husband has been exploring his ability to create using resin, and I have moved on from illustrations to crafting jewelry and hand painting the resin figurines that he has been creating. We have been teaming up on this craft for three years now, but this will be our first Avant-Garde show!

My husband has always been inspired by the uses of color, and resin crafting has been a great way for him to explore that love through the application of different inks and powders to get his colorful creations.

As an ex-art teacher, I have always believed in the therapeutic ability of art to help people express themselves, and I find it to be a wonderful form of meditation in these stressful times. I've always been creating things since I was a child, and expanding into the craft hobby and art festivals seemed like a natural progression.

As the youngest child in the family I saw the artistic ability of my father, mother and siblings, and reasoned that I should have it too...so I did a little of everything from illustrations and pottery to printmaking and jewelry making until I found the things that made me happy.

My creative process includes putting on my headphones taking a deep breath and letting whatever's inside me come out. I try not to overthink it and just let the ideas flow as it's more about the act of creating than it is the finished pieces for me.
In the next five years our focus will be to continue making enough to support our business and costs of supplies. we need to keep this going as it's been a great help for both of us to deal with the stresses of daily life. We also hope to be able to set up an online store so that we can sell our creations across the country.

a message behind our art and business is to never think that you're too old, too young, or too inexperienced to create art. If it makes you happy, go out there and do it.

Meet Rachel Simon from Pumpkin in Stitches...
Hi! My name is Rachel. I am a queer crafter, native to Cincinnati. I’ve always been interested in artsy things, always drawing, always writing, ever since I can remember. And while I don’t do much of drawing anymore, I like to dabble in a little bit of everything—whatever piques my interest in the moment.
The main thing I’ve stuck on to is cross stitch, which I have been doing in some capacity since middle school. I guess it was only natural that I would one day turn my art outward and try to make some money. I made myself an Etsy just before college. And while in college I began going to anime conventions. That’s where it really all started.

Conventions have what is called an “artist alley.” I immediately knew I wanted to be behind those booths. I started out with only hair bows and my pride heart pins, which I still sell to this day. Since then, this whole thing has evolved and morphed so much, it is hardly recognizable from where it started. But it is still wholly me.
I graduated college with a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science, and I currently work full time in a DNA lab. My business does not make me much money, and sometimes quitting seems like the best option. But now, more than ever it feels, it is so important to keep creating and to keep going through art and expression. And that’s what I plan to do, because I still have so much to learn and improve, places to go, people to meet. So much of that which keeps this worth it. This year, I’m making an effort to do more local shows—to save money, yes, but also to connect more with my community.

Meet Renee Strickland from Local Charm...

I'm Renee Strickland and I created Local Charm which features handmade jewelry and other beaded items. I'm a mom of 2 beautiful teenage girls who keep me running! I have an amazing girlfriend who has helped inspire me and encourage me to start this hobby again. They are the reason I keep going. I'm a certified pharmacy technician in a hospital by day, beading wonder and chauffeur by night. I'm excited to see what can come of all of this with support from the community and my family.
I started making jewelry when I was a teenager with my mom and sister. We did a few craft shows, but life got busy and the shows got harder to get into so we let it go. I've created pieces off and on through the years but nothing quite like I've done in the past few months. This will be my very first Avant-Garde show and I was nervous about getting in. There's always the fear of not being good enough. But creativity and beauty is subjective so who knows what may happen!
My kids and my girlfriend inspire me. They are the best judges of what may or may not work. My 18 year old is the "trendy" one. I'm the functional beauty one. So if I can merge both, it's a win.

I don't know that I have a creative process per se. I make things that I would like and hope others do too. I see beauty in many different styles. I also don't sleep well so sleep deprivation sparks creativity!
In five years I hope to still be making beautiful pieces. I hope to branch out to other functional, relatable beaded things as well. I hope that my girls will join me in the process either through designing or on the business side. And I know that my girlfriend will continue to be my biggest cheerleader and advertiser!

The message behind my work is that everyone deserves beauty in their lives. If I can create something that evokes a special response in someone, I've done my job. I try to focus on one of a kind pieces. There are no 2 beads exactly the same. I use unique heartistry to create one of a kind pieces, just like you

It's Go Time!

Meet Stacey Marshall from Crochet Haven Studio...

Hi! My name is Stacey, and I'm the owner of Crochet Haven Studio. I started to crochet as child, sitting on the front porch of my neighbor's house while she taught me the basics.
When she passed, I took a break for a-while, but finally got back into and haven't stopped since!

This will be my first show with the Avant-Garde Art and Craft Show, and my second show ever. I enjoy casually doing shows, and sharing a spot of whimsy with the world, and that's what I hope to continue doing.

Meet LeAnne Letany from Forever Fabulous...
I am a veteran hairstylist of 24 years. My passion is making people feel good about themselves physically which also helps mentally.
Adding Permanent Jewelry to my business has been nothing but a blessing. I got into the business by seeing an ad on Facebook and instantly knew that it would be a great addition to making people feel beautiful.
I’ve been in the Permanent Jewelry industry for one and a half years. I’m hoping within five years  my business will have grown and I will have made great connections with wonderful people.

This will be my third Avant-Garde show and I plan to continue to do them!

Meet Sarah Thompson from Honey Child Pops...
Honey Child Pops was started after a chance encounter with an ice cream truck.  Our young kids wanted to join all their friends in having an after-school treat, but we have food sensitivities in our family, so there was not one thing on the menu that would not lead to a rough road ahead.  On our walk home we dreamed of a dessert truck with a variety of options that were all delicious, allergen friendly and maybe some functional ingredients in there too.  We couldn't find what we were looking for, so we started making them ourselves. We've now been doing this for 7 years!

What inspires us... We want to be a force for good in our community by providing delicious treats that you can feel good about.  We only use all natural ingredients and everything is allergen friendly, so everyone can join in the fun.

How we discovered our talent.. Desire for a better treat drives our innovation.  I am a foodie with a background in fitness, wellness and herbal medicine so I love to create delicious treats that look amazing, taste even better and contain the best possible ingredients.

Our creative process... We have a lot of fun and play around in the kitchen.  Some of our creations are perfect at the first go and some are revised many many times before we share them with our community.

Our five year goal.. We are mobile by choice, so we can meet the community where they are.  We show up at festivals, backyard BBQs, weddings, birthdays and more.  We plan to continue growing in the Cincinnati area and beyond.

The message behind our work.. We are on a mission to build, grow and support healthier communities- one treat at a time.

Meet Alaina Paszt from Hive and Comb...

Tell us a bit about yourself.. We are beekeepers in Northside in Cincinnati, Ohio right outside of Spring Grove Cemetery. It has such a wide range of tree and flower stock we have found our plastic and chemical free beekeeping approach to offer the best quality raw local honey to our customers.

My husband Steve Paszt and I (Alaina Paszt) have a combined history of 28 years of experience in the hives.

This is our very first Art & Craft Show with Avant-Garde and can’t wait to join in the excitement!

What inspires us.. Our team loves food to the next level, so adding infusions to our honey to bring it to life in all different ways just like the bees visit different flowers or trees based on what is available. We like to do the same by offering seasonal flavors that match what we have a taste for preparing or cooking at that time. From spices to citrus and more.

How we got into it.. Steve’s had always admired bees at his late Uncle Henry’s house when visiting. Uncle Henry was a beekeeper and to honor him after a sudden passing in his sleep from a massive heart attack at a fairly young age, Steve took on beekeeping. After marrying Alaina’s in 2012 she had the same inquisitive and curious mind wanted to get entangled in the hives.

How we discovered our talent.. It takes a while to feel one with the bees. But, after several years of experience it becomes a bit of second nature to learn how to tend to them through the seasons. We also try to nurture new beekeepers in the area. By cutting out all the fluff and selling just what you need to get started with our free beekeeping classes in the Spring (March).

Our creative process... It is a year long activity, from inspecting for pests, allowing for space for the bees to grow, processing the honey to prepping equipment for the next season in winter. It is not for the faint of heart. Losses are hard, work is laborious heavy and sometimes very hot in the weather we had this year.

Our five year goal.. We hope to continue our passion, keep growing our followers, delivering only the best quality honey to our community.

The message behind our work.. Don’t take short cuts and work hard to get where you want to go. Kindness is king.

Meet Alayna Ozdil...

My name is Alanya Ozdil, I am 19 years old, and I am on the Autism Spectrum.

I got diagnosed with Autism when I was 5 years old, and ever since I’ve been diagnosed, I wanted to start a business where I have scents, jewelry, Cricut and laser cutting machines involved... because you never know if you’ll get hired with a disability or not. So that’s why I started Creations By Alanya on Etsy.

I’ve been owning the business for almost 6 months now, but I have been taking part in craft shows for about a year . I started using Cricut about 1.5 years ago, but I had just started tinkering with laser cutting machines such as X Tool with wood and acrylic.

I have participated in 1 Avant Garde Art and Craft show before. It was the spring one in Cincinnati, Ohio at the RSVP center last year.
What inspires me to create... It all started in elementary school! I had an amazing art teacher named Miss. Wiesman (I’m giving a shout out to her) and I’m still in contact with her to this day and she taught me about all kinds of different artists and techniques you can use in arts and crafts. She was also my first art teacher I ever had in school. We’ve also participated at multiple art and craft shows before.

I discovered my talent when everyone would give me compliments and the teachers would give me straight A’s. I also knew I was a good artist because my mom also was when she was in school, and I also have unique ideas with arts and crafts for sure!
My creative process is definitely based on the disability community and shopping at craft stores. I give back to a lot of disability and animal based charities with the proceeds I make at craft shows. But one thing I did want to say about craft stores is I sure do miss going to JoAnn Craft Stores... probably like everyone else who is part of these Avant Garde Art and Craft Shows. That is one place I loved getting to know the workers and finding all kinds of supplies.

My five year goal.. I definitely see myself having an in-person store probably somewhere around the Mt. Lookout, Columbia Tusclum, or Hyde Park area close to where my dad works. I would definitely hire people with disabilities who are able to work in a typical work environment.

Meet Jill Roty from J. Tresa Comfort...

I’m Jill and my business is J. Tresa Comfort! I am 25 and recently married! I make hand knitting blankets in various sizes and can do customized lettering, designs, and colors! I am located just over the river in Dayton, KY! I love to craft and knit and I also work for a wedding coordination team and do wedding florals! I am originally from just outside of Philadelphia, but moved to Cincinnati in 2019! Can’t wait to meet everyone!

I have been knitting for 3 years now, my grandmother and mother taught me! I have been selling my blankets now for 6 months!

This is my first Avant-Garde Art & Craft Shows! I am so excited to participate and be a part of such an amazing experience! I am most excited to see the other vendors work!

What inspires me to create? I find that when I knit I like to use my hands to knit the chunky yarn. With that said, I find it very satisfying to be able to produce items people love and use with just my hands and the yarn! It motivates me to create more as I see people happily using my blankets, seeing others happy makes me happy!

How I got into my craft.. My mother, she is the most creative, crafty woman I know. She was a pastry chef and now works in the medical field, but she taught me how to scrapbook, crochet, knit, needlepoint, sew, and so much more. So I think through doing all of this with my mom, I just found a love for it!

How I discovered my talent.. I am not one who has many things in life that ever felt like they came naturally to me, but when I started to craft and knit it felt like my hands already knew how to before even my brain did.

How I describe your creative process? My perfect creative process can rarely happen because life gets crazy, but I love to knit completely alone with mellow music and will stay seated there knitting until the blanket is complete.

My five year goal... I can’t quite say where we will be in 5 years, but I can say I hope we are still hand knitting blankets for our community and providing a quality good that makes people happy!

The message behind my work.. We like to say ‘May your day be all the more cozy’, we just want people to feel the love that went into each and every J. Tresa Comfort blanket!

Meet Erica Vaught from Reignbow Bites Custom Cakery, LLC...

How exciting! Click the Links below to watch & or read about your baker!

https://boldjourney.com/meet-erica-vaught/

I have a rare genetic bone disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta with a PHEX gene mutation x2, which results in X-Linked Hypophosphatemia! What a mouthful! This has led me to another chronic condition- CRPS Type 1 & 2! I am mildly disabled, but this doesn't stop me from creating beautiful desserts for all of you! This is my PASSION!

Everything I create is made to order & from scratch! I use only the highest quality ingredients while creating my own extracts! Every order is baked with fresh eggs from my own backyard, as well as fresh farm milk! Each order is very special, no matter how big or small. I create custom gourmet treats for weddings, birthdays, milestone events, & more. If you just have a sweet tooth, I have something for that, too! Stay connected with me to get all my updates, events, products, availability, & much more!

I have been baking my entire life thank to my Mamaw! I started my "business" 11 years ago coming up Feb 2026! I decided to go full time by 2018! This will be my first one! I am excited to opportunity to be a part of such a beautiful show!

What inspires me to create? The happiness it brings to other people! I provide for a lot of weddings b/c I specialize in buttercream flowers, and I get a lot of feedback from the families and the brides! The fact that I am a part of such a special day in someone's life and I contributed to that happiness is what its all about!

How I got into my craft/hobby... I actually started staying home to homeschool my oldest son who was in fourth grade at the time. I started watching a lot more TV and I started seeing these baking shows and I thought how cool would be to get my son a Lego Star Wars cake because he was really into that at the time! I sought out a custom baker. She was out in Harrison. And when I got the cake, it wasn't really what I expected and so I thought for my other son's birthday in August, I would give it a try! It was not easy! Not even close!! I have the pictures of my very first cakes lol and we all have to start somewhere. I was so intrigued by the entire process, that here I am 11 years later doing it as a full-time profession! I've never done anything for more than a year much less almost 11 lol This has become more than a job. It is my passion and I enjoy every single design that has left my home!

How I discovered my talent... I have always been crafty with other mediums like wood, paper, cardboard, anything with glue... really just any arts and crafts that I have always done, including knitting. I don't really see this as food. I see it as an art medium, and I think that is what helps me create!

How I describe my creative process..  I need significant advance notice for any complex, custom designs. I have to have time to plan think gather material or build. What I do cannot be ordered and done in one week two weeks or even a couple of weeks.

I am not much of a sketcher and I never really know what I'm going to do until everything is in front of me. I do get inspiration photos, but I do not copy. At this point, people just give me a theme and colors and tell me they trust my design process, and I just kinda do whatever... It's really nice that people have that trust in me 🫶🏼

Where I see myself in five years... Well, lol as long as my body holds out, I would like to be creating for large events and weddings! I would love to have just a little studio for my CAKES consultations and maybe a little rentable party area for classes! I would love to be able to have an internship program, and teach upcoming kids and bakers!

The message behind my work is summed up in the quote by Julia Child... "Find something you're passionate about and stay tremendously interested in it!"I think everybody should have the opportunity to have something special or unique created for them on their special day even if it's just one time! To create a core memory with the dessert is something special!

Meet Kelly Rumsey from Long Spring Prints...

A few random facts:

- I work as an Instructional Designer for the University of Cincinnati.

- I previously lived in China for 10 years, where I taught English at a university in Changchun.

- My husband and I are currently converting a school bus into a tiny home - we are about to install bathroom fixtures and kitchen cabinets!

- I love to travel...we recently got back from an amazing trip to Iceland.

- We enjoy spending as much time outdoors as possible - hiking, biking, camping, gardening. (You'll find that most of my prints are nature-inspired.)

I started printmaking during Covid, when I was growing tired of work and social life involving constant screens. I had seen some printmakers' work at an art fair in Ann Arbor, and the process really interested me, so I thought it was a great time to try something new, fill the stay-at-home time, and avoid the screen time. This is my first Avant-Garde Arts & Crafts show!

My inspiration to create comes mainly from wanting to remember a particular moment or place. It's a way to capture and extend my experience of that beauty, and hopefully share it with others.

I've enjoyed "doing art" for a while, but I got into printmaking specifically after seeing a few printmakers' work at an art fair in Ann Arbor. One of them spent some good time showing us how his woodblock printing process worked, reducing a block down to nothing, layer by layer, but building up the prints layer by layer at the same time. That process captured me and stuck in my head for a few years until I found myself with the time and opportunity to try it for myself.

I suppose I discovered my talent for art and drawing in elementary school art classes and through the encouragement of many teachers along the way. I would say my talent for printmaking is still developing print by print!

One thing I love about printmaking is that there's a lot of room for creativity, but there's also structure and limitations to respect. I'm constantly learning new techniques that expand the way I can use and blend colors or build layers, but I'm still confined to the number of layers I'm printing. Between carving each layer, there's a period of puzzling out exactly what part of the block to carve away. And even though I have an idea of what I'm trying to accomplish, there's always an element of surprise when pulling the first print of a new layer to see what it really looks like. I love both the calculated planning and the surprise reveal!

My five year goal.. I would love to be doing more shows and sharing my work through local businesses. However, I'm also careful to keep it as an enjoyable hobby without adding the stress or pressure to grow the business side.

The message behind my work.. I hope my work helps inspire people to slow down and enjoy the beauty around them!

Meet  Steve Kosztala  from  KOSZTALASCOPES ...  I am a kaleidoscope-maker.  Growing up in New London, Connecticut in a large family, I didn...
