See you this weekend, Cincinnati!

Meet Kelley from Bead Heads Jewelry...

Kelley King is a Florida native, but she relocated to the Cincinnati area in 2019. Kelley is a professional dance teacher and Choreographer by day and a "bead head" by night!

Kelley started bead weaving at age 16. Being from a Cherokee family, it's important to declare a tribal tradition that you will carry on. That is how the beads found her!

This is Kelley's 2nd Avant-Garde event and is so excited to be able to share her bead love. She enjoys making unique and individual works of wearable art that are as unique and individual as you!

You can find images of her works on Facebook at Bead Heads Jewelry. Custom orders are available for your special event (weddings, vacations, sporting events,  birthdays, etc). You can contact her through her Facebook page or email (beadheadsjewelry@gmail.com). In Kelley's words, "life is too short to wear department store jewelry!"

Meet Lara from Laras Bottles and more...

Hello! My name is Lara. I have a wonderfully supportive husband; am a mother to 3 sons, 1 daughter and 2 daughter-in-laws; am a doting grandmother to a beautiful, strong granddaughter; and a dog mom! I love crafting (obvious), walking with my hubby and dog, wine, soccer, yoga and decorating for the holidays. This is my first time to have a booth at this craft show.

I have 4 children in the military. As any military parent can attest…this can add a little bit of stress to your day to day. Late night crafting got me through basic training and gut churning deployments. The middle of the night restlessness and fears were fuel for creative juices to flow. This became my form of therapy. I was able to redirect my bottled up emotions to create something whimsical and fun.

have been crafty since I was a kid. My first bottle creation was actually an 8th grade Home Ec project and I still have it!

What really spring-boarded my creations with wine bottles and mason jars was hosting “craft day with the girls.” Once a month I would organize a get together at my house. The crafting day kicked off with an idea; advanced to supplies, food, wine and laughter; and ended up with each of us creating a unique decoration and lots of memories. One of the craft days, we used wine bottles and I just kept going with the creations! I soon had a big stash of painted wine bottles and started gifting them to friends and loved ones. Now I am taking on the venture of selling them to new friends.

I love decorating my home for the holidays. As I decorate my home, an inspiration for something new often pops into my head. I typically sketch out my idea in a notebook and then pull supplies together to create it. I tweak it until the vision in my head has a physical form I am happy with. Then I make more! The original creation ends up in my decor and I am able to share that inspiration with others. My goal with my work is to create something whimsical to make people smile. One of my favorite things to do is to create something unique from a request. Give me a theme or an idea and I’ll turn that into something special. It is most rewarding to see the reaction from a handmade, personal gift.

Meet Taressa from Curry's Crafting Corner...

Hi, our crafting business is Curry's Crafting Corner. It includes myself, my wife and my 20-year-old son Jarrett. We live on a mini farm in Mt. Orab. We have miniature donkeys, horses, goats, chickens, rabbits, lizards, cats, dogs and even a mini pig who lives inside the house. Piggy Sue is very smart, and house broken.

We have been doing craft fairs for the past two years. We started by making vinyl gifts but now all our products are sublimation. This is our first Avant-Garde event and we are so excited to participate.

I started making gifts for my wife and son and they loved them so much we started expanding and making other products. We get our inspiration by our customers' needs. I discovered my talent because my wife pushed me to expand into making products for others.

I love designing products with the customers input and putting my own special touch on them. In 5 years, I see myself still designing and crafting and making others personalized gifts. I want to make my customers happy and have them completely satisfied.

Don't Miss Out!!

Meet Shelly Bauer of Purple Birch Shop...
My name is Shelly, and I've always had a love for art, crafts, and making things ever since I was little.  I'm a mother of two amazing boys and we have two rescue dogs.  My husband, Andrew, also has a talent for making things.  He does all the woodworking for our items, from cutting/building, sanding, staining, and sealing. He is also very hands-on with many of the items we create.

We began selling our items in December 2018, but we have been creating items for personal use as long as I can remember. This is my first Avant-Garde show! I'm always inspired by my boys, and things they are interested in.  I also enjoy window shopping and exploring Pinterest/Facebook groups for new ideas and trends to put my own spin on.
Our craft business really began with baby shoes.  I discovered a pattern for them around Christmas a few years ago.  I had purchased coordinating pajamas for our family, and I thought it would be fun to add matching slippers as well.  Ever since the first pair, I have been obsessed with these adorable little booties.  My oldest son learned to walk in the soft-soled shoes, and my youngest has been wearing them since birth.  As for our wood items, my husband has always been extremely creative and talented when it comes to woodworking.  We decided to combine our two talents, and create a variety of handcrafted and hand painted wood signs, planter hangers, cutting boards, etc.  It is always fun giving him a new challenge of something I would like for him to create. I have always enjoyed crafting.  I love the idea of taking some sort of raw material, whether it be fabric, wood, or paint, and turn it into something.  I would typically gift some sort of handmade items for holidays, birthdays, showers. new babies, etc., and it was always very well received.   Friends and family have been extremely supportive and encouraging us to sell items.  After hearing "you should sell this" or being asked "do you have a shop?" a few times, I realized there might be a market for what we create.
I LOVE fabric shopping and usually can't wait to sew up something new when I purchase new material.  If I'm ever feeling uninspired, a quick trip to the store usually takes care of that!  I'm also inspired by practical things I would like in my own home, or by ideas presented by customers, friends and family.  Sometimes I have a vision of the end product in mind, and other times I don't really know exactly what an item will look like until it's complete.  I also love creating custom and one of a kind personalized items.  In the next five years I would love to expand our business to have a bigger online presence through the creation of a website as well as begin carrying items in local boutiques.
We are proud of the items we create and we believe quality is what sets us apart.  We pay close attention to detail and believe it shows in the items we create.  Each item is handcrafted and/or hand painted, you can see and feel the quality of our items in person.

Meet Michele Meyers of Buddha Bottle Co...
My name is Michele Meyers.  I am a Mom, HR Professional, and Artist with a passion for creating art from materials not normally combined, such as a rusty ¾ inch hex bolt and a baby blue single ply wool and acrylic blend.   My only addiction in life is soda. I found myself keeping the empty soda bottles after indulging. I was not completely sure why I was keeping them, probably because in the back of my mind I thought maybe in 50 years an old Coke bottle would be worth enough for me to retire on.  My daughter hit the teenage years and slowly started needing me less and less, disappearing to her room more and more. So combine all of those things – my love of creating, soda addiction, and a lot more free time – and you get Buddha Bottle Co.
The message behind my work is a message that I am very passionate about – there is no “normal”.   As babies, the world is a blank slate. Our reality is shaped by our parents, society, religion, school, etc.  Society leads us to believe we have to look a certain way or achieve specific goals in order to be “normal” and accepted.  I have learned that this is a false notion. We need to celebrate our individuality, embrace our differences, and do crazy things like decorate soda bottles with bolts and flowers.
In 5 years, I hope my business continues to provide me with joy.  My creative process involves several steps, all of which I perform in my makeshift “studio” aka my garage and living room.  I do all of the painting in my garage and all of the embellishing in my living room. Creating at home allows me to be present for my teenage daughter and two dogs, Sky and Riley.  It really is the best of both worlds.
Meet Kelly Stone of K. Stone Creations...
My name is Kelly and I recently started K.Stone Creations.  I am a happy to call myself a newcomer to the world of Artisans: specifically the art of beading and jewelry making.  For years my background had been in healthcare. I loved being in a profession where I could offer my heart and talents in a way that would bring hope and healing to others. I was fortunate to have a 15 year career in direct patient care as well as managing a large team of gifted professionals. My course took an abrupt turn when at the age of 36, I suffered a stroke.  The pathway of professional turned patient has been both challenging and extremely humbling. Rehabilitation is not easy and it has taken a lot of work to find myself amidst the changes that occurred. I feel very fortunate that in addition to my beautiful partner, two amazing children, Merrell the aussiedoodle, and loving family, the places I continually find joy are in the arts and nature. I've been focused on the art of jewelry making for the last year. This will be my first Avant-Garde Show!
I have and always will be someone who loves using my time and talents for others. To be able to make something one of a kind for someone that will create a lasting memory for them is such a rewarding feeling.  I work hard to put that uniqueness and care into the pieces I create. I have a beautiful neighbor, named Roberta, who is in her 80s and recently widowed. She is an extremely gifted artist who has spent many years of her life devoted to her crafts.  Roberta knew of my stroke and my struggles. She has become a great supporter in my life, taking me under her wing, and mentoring me the art of beading and jewelry making.
I found myself feeling inspired by Roberta's teachings and the more I made and shared with family and friends, the more I wanted to create.  It has been with great persistence (and many mistakes) that I discovered this was something I really enjoyed.
I don't know how many can relate, but once I am "All In", my mind races with ideas and at all hours of the day and night! Many a-nights I have dreamt about beading and woke having to get my thoughts down before I could fall back to sleep! I take pictures, make drawings, jot down notes in my phone and then spend time going back and reviewing before I start a project. When it comes to crafting a piece, I spend a great deal of time planning before diving in.  My Type A definitely likes to try to dominate creative process!
In five years, I hope to still be creating. To still be learning. To be reaching as many people as I can.  I have only just started an instagram page but hope in five years to tap into an online market. In addition, I hope to be more intimately networked.  Both in my career in healthcare as well as this opportunity as an Artisan, I think there is so much to gain from networking with other gifted and talented artists!
The message behind my work is this; Without a doubt, be your authentic self: find your passion and live it!

Meet Elizabeth Barron of Elizabeth Barron, LLC...
Prior to shifting her photography hobby into a career, I spent 20 years in the
technology industry. But, for as long as I can remember, being in nature is
always where I felt most at home. When I’m not working and spending time
with family, I spend most of my time with my camera in the abundant parks and
nature preserves in the greater Cincinnati area. I have a deep appreciation and
love for all plants, flowers, insects, and animals, and enjoys telling their stories
through photography. I post a unique nature photo a day on my Instagram
(@elizabethnphoto) and Facebook (@elizabethbarronphotography) accounts.
I am a member of the Professional Photographers of America, and working to
complete my OCVN Ohio Naturalist certification.
I have been a photographer for many years, but have only made it my full time
profession this year. This is my first Avant-Garde show! I love finding things in
nature that other people might miss, or walk past. I feel that every single plant,
insect, flower, tree, and animal has a unique story to tell, even the ones that we
consider commonplace. Nature’s miracles are everywhere! I have loved creative
hobbies since I was a little kid. I blame my mother and grandmother; we spent
hours and hours doing arts and crafts. :)
I don’t know if I have a “talent” or if I just practice a lot. When you’re doing
something you love, you will naturally get better at it with time, because you
love it! I’ve taken over 50,000 nature photos in my life, and I still have a lot to
improve. I simply take every chance I can to get out in nature and see what I
can discover. I try and find new angles and perspectives that people may not
have noticed before. During my photo post processing, I sometimes tweak the
settings to give photos a unique look, while still honoring the beauty of the
subject.
Honestly, in five years, I hope to just be making enough money to keep me
going. I am not in this to make millions or grow an empire, I simply want to be
able to continue to be in the woods with my camera. :)
The mission of my business is to foster our kinship with nature. In everything I
do, whether it be commissioned work, or floral product photography or fine art
prints, I want that to be the end goal. I chose the word kinship because it
represents more than just a “connection.” The word “kinship” also encompasses
respect, appreciation, oneness, unity, acknowledgment, compassion, and love
for the world in which we are a part.

We're Coming Atcha, Cincy!

Meet Bethany Flick from Raven Aim Art...
I'm a mother of 2 and I work in Business Operations. This is my little escape from reality that I use for self-fulfillment. I've lost a lot of family within a year's time, and this was a way I found I could cope and smile again. I started dabbling in resin art and acrylic pour in December but took a liking to pastels and still life sketches in high school. Typically writing and poetry are my artistic outlet. This will be my first Avant-Garde show!
Having to align with society's rules puts such confining expectations on me as a person. This lets me drop my walls and allows me to be confident in having the feelings I do without guilt. As much as I enjoy writing poetry, what I write tends to come out dark and ominous. I never smiled through it, no matter how proud I was by my work. This art is so happy, colorful, and fruitful that I found my smile again, so it's stuck. I decided one day that I wanted to see if I had what it took, the science/measuring ratios of it as well as the passion to make it something beautiful that people would want to see every day in their homes. It was an "Art or Bust" type decision when I made the investment purchase. After my first piece came out, my husband expressed his secret doubt he had in me, but then we fell in love with the final product and decided to pursue it.
If I'm making pieces in general, I turn my most upbeat music on in my work space and just let things flow. I know my initial idea will never hold since the medium is quite unpredictable, but I just let things flow where they may, and let go of the control I try to put on everything else in my life. That's when I end up happiest with the end. If I'm making an order for someone in particular, I like to ask them what kind of music/artist is their favorite, and I listen to them while I work so I can feel like I'm vibing with them while making their piece.
Hopefully, in five years, I've gained a good social media following, just sharing what makes me smile. I'd like to be present at more shows regularly and to be steadily working on projects. Life is unpredictable. It does things that leaves you feeling out of control, hurt, and depressed. We have to remember that sometimes, letting things go and just going with the flow can lead to peace. It can take you to a place where you can smile again as long as you just remember that there is always light. It might be the dimmest light ever or just "less dark", but it's there waiting for you to find it.

Meet Debbie Brown from Spice Spice Baby...
We are a couple that started this business because we wanted to offer good, affordable spices to people who like to cook. We have been creating our recipes for about 8 months. This is our first Avant-Garde show and we are super excited!
Our customers inspire us.  With their ever growing ideas and repeat interest in our business products, we want to keep them coming back for new and exciting spices. We felt like there wasn't a place in Cincinnati that offered good, fresh, affordable and fun spices for home cooks and. chefs. We wanted to change that. We discovered out love for creating spics because my husband is a chef so he likes to play around with ideas a lot in the kitchen!
In five years, we hope to continue doing pop-up shows and events and possibly open our own brick and mortar store. The message behind our work is this - with the right products, anyone can be a good cook and we are here to offer you those products and let you prove it!
Meet Michael Halsey from Little Turtle Woodworking...
I have been married for 8 years. I have two children. My passion is woodworking and family. I have been woodworking off and on for 8 years and this is will be my first show with Avant-Garde, and only my third show overall
I just simply enjoy the process of making something from nothing and being able to take an image in my head and create it with wood. I was involved in construction for most of my life, I’ve always loved making things with my hands, and when my wife asked if I could try to make a dining table I decided that this process of taking raw wood and creating things of function and beauty was something that I really wanted to one day do full time.
My first official project was creating a right food dining room table for my wife for making memories with family, I had a very very limited amount of “woodworking tools” and woodworking knowledge at the time but greatly enjoyed the process and was hooked. Each new project has its own unique creative process, unless it is a commissioned piece, I will typically have an idea in my head and slowly create as I go, really only pre-plan requested pieces for clients.
In five years, we plan to turn our creations into a full-time family business! There is no message behind our work, we just love creating beautiful handcrafted woodworking creations!

Meet Linda Getz from B J and M Creative Designs...
My name is Linda Getz and I have lived in Fairfield all my life. I graduated from Miami University in Oxford with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. I am currently in my 29th year at St. Ann Catholic School in Hamilton teaching sixth grade. I have many animals that I have rescued and adopted.
I have been sewing and doing crafts since I was ten years old. I combine my love of teaching and sewing by offering classes for children.  I am new to craft shows and this is my first Avant Garde event.
I have always loved sewing and creating something new. My Mom was a sewer and loved crafts and passed her knowledge onto me. A lot of my business is from customers who have lost a loved one and I make memory bears or quilts from their clothes.  It gives me pleasure knowing I am giving comfort to others. I see myself in the next five years expanding my business, attending more craft shows, and selling online.

Spring Has Almost Sprung!

Meet Joanie Weidner from J's CollageScapes...
By the time of this art show I will be four months from retirement. Although my job has been a real joy — Administrative Assistant for a middle school — my new-found freedom from 8 am to 4 pm will give me time to do what I love and what nurtures me... to be creative. I was a quiet, shy child so art became the my way to express. I have been creative for as long as I can remember. Before discovering my love for collage, I’ve expressed myself in drawing, jewelry, print making, batik, and other media. I am a member of the Kennedy Heights Art Center Artist Collective and recently displayed my work at the members’ art show. When I am not lost in my latest collage creation, I can be found gardening, reading, and traveling with my husband and biggest fan, Jeffry. I have been creating collages since 2013 and this is my first Avant Garde art show!
It’s more of a calling to let out the varied nuances of my inner world. I have no idea what will show up. My regular practice of mediation does make it easier to let it flow from my hands to to the canvas. I create to bring a smile to others. The joy found in exploring the various art supplies and mediums. After making larger collages for a while I came across these mini canvases and loved how my creative process became more fluid.

I took a class at our local art center 6 years ago and fell in the love with the flexibility of collage making. If you don’t like how something looks you just add to the canvas — put another piece of paper over it! It is a limitless, free form of creating. Perfection is not required, willingness to explore textures is all it takes.
My workroom is surrounded by magazines, wrapping paper, calendars, any paper that has an image or texture. I look through it, something grabs my attention, I tear it out and lay it down, then I do it again and again, forming an idea, a pleasing display of color and shapes. Sometimes the image is very obvious, other times it is not. There are stories in each one, but the stories are for the viewer’s interpretation. No two are alike. I surprise myself, often thinking, “where did that come from?!”

In 5 years I see myself spreading my talent to a larger territory; making a vacation out of it. Creating a website. Knowing that I have the ability to create when I want and as much as I want in my retirement years gives me a sense of purpose. As always, I remain open to possibilities.
I believe I give everything I see in the world the all meaning it has for me. So others will create their own message depending on how they choose to look at my work. My greatest hope is that the message to “stay open to wonder” will be seen and felt.

My Mini CollageScapes are sold with a black easel. Although this is they way I am marketing them, there are other creative ways to display them. For example, staple a looped ribbon to the back to hang it on a wall. Change them with the seasons. Keep some on hand for gift giving.

Meet Sherry Steffan from Sherry Steffan Designs...
I have been making jewelry for about 10 yrs. I worked full-time and created/did shows at night and weekends. It was getting a little overwhelming, so I decided to put me 1st and quit my job. I became a realtor so I could have more time to make jewelry.
I haven't done an Avant-Garde show but I have heard so many great things about it! My inspirations come from life, nature, and happiness. I started making jewelry because I wanted certain style and couldn't ever find. When I would wear my creations, and people would buy it off of me. The inspiration spins in my head for awhile, then usually scribble it down, then create. Hopefully, I will be selling in 10 shops around town and doing shows. Inspiration and meaning behind each piece can be different for everyone.

Meet Ariana Larson from Counselor Creations...
I started my business in November of 2018, so I am in my first year! This will be my first one and I am very excited to be a part of it this year! I have always loved to create, it has always been an outlet for me. Whenever I was upset or needed alone time or time to think, I always turned to creating. I can’t say I gather inspiration from just one place or that there is just one reason, sometimes I just create to create because I truly enjoy it!
No photo description available.
I have been crafting pretty much my entire life, my mom has always been into crafting and I have always had a deep love for creating. In high school, I took a calligraphy elective and have been loving calligraphy and hand lettering ever since. I can’t say I have a pinpointed moment or time that I discovered this, but I had friends see my work and even acquaintances who would tell me they would love to buy my work or order custom pieces. At that time I was still in graduate school and didn’t have time to begin a business, but it was something that stuck with me and I decided when I had the time, I would begin my business.
No photo description available.
That’s a hard one because it isn’t always the same! I use music a lot in my creative process, music has always moved me deeply as it does for many of us. Majority of the time, I just pick up my pencil and paper and create whatever I am feeling. I would love to eventually open an Etsy shop and be able to reach people all around the world with my creations!
No photo description available.
I would say it is to create what refreshes your soul. Crafting for me has always been a recharging activity that I lose myself in and it is amazing to bring that into homes of others and spark joy to create.
