Tomorrow is the Day!

 Meet Elizabeth from EF Creations...

I'm a married mom of two boys, who are 12 and nine. My husband and I have been married for 16 years, and together more than 20.Along with being a wife and mom, I am an emergency room nurse.

I started sewing within the last year. I asked for, and got, a sewing machine for Christmas last year for some simple at home projects, which turned into a passionate hobby of mine. I had no idea that I would fall in love with creating. For me, it's a relaxing hobby. In five years, I hope to be creating cute items that people can love and enjoy.

I'm very excited to be participating in my very first Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show.

Meet Emily from Mason Muggery..

We are Michael and Emily Mason. We are ceramic hobbyists. We have nine children, and a troubling amount of pets. Michael is a computer technician, and Emily is a stay at home mom.

We started learning how to do ceramics during the start of the pandemic. During the pandemic we binge watched “The Great Pottery Throw down.” Neither of us had tried pottery before beyond a bit of hand building in high school. We decided to give it a try! We bought a wheel and some clay, not really sure how it would go.  It was quite a mess for a while, but with a lot of time, and YouTube, we got to making some really cool stuff!

We work together on some projects, matching mugs, or a pitcher/tumbler set for example. Michael throws the tumblers, and Emily throws the matching pitcher. We both really enjoy throwing, and it’s often hard to keep up with all the ideas we have. We both enjoy trying new techniques and tools. The more we create, the more we want to keep on creating!

We love that hand thrown pottery is a great example of how art can be functional and beautiful at the same time. We also like to tell our children that sometimes it’s okay to not know what you want to be when you grow up, and then discover your passion at age 36!

In five years, we would love to continue working on our craft, and hopefully grow as potters and artists.  Emily would like to be a full time potter.

Meet Olivia Michal from KO Crafts...

My name is Olivia, and I do hand embroidery. I love to do custom work and join art shows! My grandmother, Karen, makes Kitchen Buddies. These Kitchen Buddies are super cute paper towel rolls that come with a wash cloth, hand towel, scrubby and of course, the paper towels. Now, I have been doing hand embroidery for four years. My grandmother has been making her Kitchen Buddies for around five years.

When I see how my customers react to their customer orders, it makes me want to continue creating. I love seeing how happy my creations make my customers, it is what inspires me to keep creating. I truly discovered my talent when I was teaching children how to do embroidery, that is when I realized I truly have a passion for it.

Usually, it takes me hours... or days to complete an embroidery hoop. I start with tracing my design on paper, and then fabric, and then sew. I love what I do, and I hope everyone can agree.

This is my third show, but I am so excited to be a part of another Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show!

Black Friday?! More Like Shopping Sunday!

Meet Monica from MonTronsGifts...

I am a stay-at-home mom with three children, ages four, two, and six months. I am a self-published children's book author and currently have 4 books available. My children love books, and are definitely my inspiration for my writing. I also crochet a wide variety of things: baskets, bags/purses, pillows, scarves, pot holders, kitchen scrubbies, face scrubbies, pumpkins, stuffed animals, stuffed letters, and blankets.

When I first started crocheting I was in Junior High and learning from my grandma. She taught me the basics and from there my skills grew and I got more confident in my work and am now able to make so many amazing things. I am always trying new stitches and patterns to grow my inventory!
I have been doing craft shows for about 2 years now and this will be my second Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show. I hope to be able to continue doing shows for years to come and would love for my business to grow and my name to become known for my creations!

With crocheting, I am able to be really creative with my color choices and the patterns that I do, but it is sometimes hard to try and create things that meet everyone's likes. That is why I love taking custom orders and being able to create exactly what the customer is looking for.

Meet Pamela from Prismatic Projectz...

My name is Pamela Mulford but I go by Pj. I’m 24, born and raised in Cincinnati, and I’m the owner of my tiny business, Prismatic Projectz. My business is a showcase of my mixed media art. I make creations ranging from wearable art to home decor. My mediums focus mostly on sculptural, fiber, and painting.

I was raised to be creative and imaginative. So I would have to say from the moment I picked up a crayon, I discovered my love for the craft. Just being able to make something that really allows me to express myself and having someone else appreciate my work as well is what motivates me. I’m so excited to participate in my first Avant-Garde Arts & Craft Show!

I’d have to thank my grandmothers, aunt and my art teachers for always inspiring me to be creative. I think practice and picking up new artistic skills throughout my life and having many positive affirmations from my family and peers. It made me want to continue doing this all the time.

I like to find inspiration online or work on a skill I have been perfecting. When I am painting and doing sculptural art, I listen to podcasts or music. If I’m crocheting I like to watch TV, sit outside or hang out with friends.

One day, i’d love to do this full time and travel to art shows/festivals or be working on commissions. The message behind my work is.. All in all, do what you love. There will be people out there that will love what you do.

Meet Kayla from KNCGlass...

I recently moved from New York to the mid-west to pursue my career in glass. I'm currently a glass assistant at Centre College in Kentucky. What I enjoy most about working with glass is that I get to explore new places and meet people from various backgrounds. Teaching others about glass processes is what fuels me, in addition to making my own work. I have been working with glass for six years. I've primarily been exposed to glass in an academic setting.

I think of glass as a meditative act. While it distracts me from other things I have going on, it also gives me space to be analytic and generate my energy into something productive. I think seeing and talking to other glass artists has helped me want to try exhibiting at craft shows. There's an opportunity to meet a variety of people, and I like the idea of connectivity through art and craft.

I was going to school to be a K-12 art educator. I took a glass class as an elective on a whim. The moment I experienced the material in it's awe and difficulty, I was hooked. That is what got me into the craft.

My creative process often involves having an idea, trying to make something, failing numerous times, analyzing where I went wrong, and then trying again until my idea becomes reality. There's a few displeased grunts involved, but I usually manage to get it worked out. In five years, I see myself teaching glass at an educational institution somewhere, and I also see myself continuing to do craft shows in my spare time.

I don't necessarily think I have a message behind my craft based work. However, I will say that I do like making work that is a bit more accessible to people from various walks of life. I like the idea that anyone can own a handmade glass object.

Meet Melanie from CraftCreationsByMelO

I'm a Physical Therapist by day and an avid crafter by night. I have been crafting for quite a long time, dabbling in all sorts of activities including glass etching and jewelry making. I've currently been working with concrete for about six months.

I think it's in my blood to create, it provides me an outlet for my energy and it keeps my mind and hands busy. I'm not sure I would say I'm talented, but I do love what I create!
My creative process usually begins at night when my mind just thinks through everything I can make, and what I can do differently or try differently to create something unique.

This will be my first Avant-Garde Art and Craft Show and I'm so excited!

In five years, I hope to be creating, whether it's still with concrete or a whole new medium. My philosophy is to create and inspire playfulness.

See-ya in Cincinnati!

Meet Wendy Ellen of WendyEllen's, LLC...
Hi my name is Wendy Creech and I started WendyEllen’s, LLC in 2018.  We are a small home-based business that creates one of a kind denim and canvas purses, totes, duffel bags, and accessories.
It is our objective to create only high quality, durable products with great attention to detail. When not working as a dental hygienist, I have always dabbled in crafting, but this has become more than just a hobby to me.  It has become my passion and how I spend every spare moment that I have.

This will be the first Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show that I will be participating in.  I’ve had the opportunity to participate in a few other craft shows and look forward to many more. I truly appreciate the feedback I get from customers regarding my creations.  I listen to suggestions with an open mind and have customized many orders to fit a particular person’s wants or needs.
Discovering my passion was an evolution from the first stitch.  The very first tote I made as a gift, which wasn’t very good, sparked something inside me that I knew I had to pursue.   I love creating something that is not only unique, but of very high quality. I have practiced endless hours and learned so much and all of this is poured into each and every creation that comes out of my sewing room.  I can spend hours in a fabric store getting a tactile feel for the materials and seeing the end product in my head.

In 5 years, with a more sizable work space, and I’d love to have WendyEllen’s, LLC available in select boutiques.  I know that as long as I am capable of continuing to create, I will do so with the same feeling of accomplishment that I feel today.

Meet Susan of Silver Serpent Chainmaille...
Hi! My Name is Susan and I hand-weave individual metal ring links to make jewelry and other cool stuff. I found this art in 2008 and I fell in love with it. I have been weaving rings ever since. It has grown to be one of my great passions and it is also an expression of myself and my creativity.
Just about anything and everything inspires me for my creations. Sometimes its a conversation with a friend, or seeing something in nature or sometimes I am working on a project and another project or idea will blossom from what I am currently working on. Then I have to jot down notes and return to the idea once the current project is finished.

What got me interested in chainmaille? Well it was actually an internet search on google images. I was looking for something specific and chainmaille items kept coming up instead of what I was looking for. After awhile I started to really look at it and just fell in love with it. I knew then that this was something I was going to try doing myself. It can be frustrating at times but in the end it is very enjoyable and relaxing to me.

Meet Monica Simpson of Mon's Trons Gifts...
Hello! I am a 24 year old wife and mother of two. I am a self-published children's book author, and I really enjoy writing, making crochet blankets and scarves and making tie blankets.
I discovered my talent for writing after years and years of reading books and thinking up stories of my own, but never putting words on paper. After finally sitting down and trying my hand at writing, I turned out to really like it. Now, my two kids inspire me daily. Before I had them, I was writing adult fiction, but once they were born, I decided to switch to children's books, and it was a great decision for me.
My grandma taught me to crochet when I was in junior high and since then I have continued to try new patterns and stitches. I now teach my grandma the new stitches that I learn. Blanket making is something I have always enjoyed. It started by making them for myself and other people. One day it just made sense to start selling my creations to others.
My creative process is quite simple really. For my blankets and scarves, I first choose the colors that I will be using and then I decide what type of pattern I will be using. Making different color patterns is the most fun part for me. My creative process for my writing is a little trickier. I first have to decide what I want to write about and then I make an outline or rough draft of my work. I then critique it multiple times until it is exactly the way I want it to be.
The message behind my work is that you can do anything you put your mind to, and that hard work really does pay off if you want something bad enough.

Meet Kelsea Hudgins of Milk Suds...
We are Milk Suds and we make homemade soaps, lotions, bath fizzies, castile soap, and lip balms. We are a mother/daughter team that have been working together for over 13 years. We work together to create not only the products but the labels and everything else that goes into our craft. As far as backgrounds go, Renee/mom has an art degree from Miami University and Kelsea/daughter went to Mount St. Joseph and got a bachelor’s in biology and a doctorate in physical therapy. We both live in Guilford, Indiana where we make all of our products.
We started making soap out of curiosity – a lot of trial and error was involved.  There are so many creative options for soap making. You can change the oils used, liquids such as water or simply any other liquid, fragrance, pouring techniques, and color scheme can all be altered as you want. It is endless when it comes to options and you rarely can make every batch exactly the same. What inspires us to create?  I would say the ingredients inspire us the most. We get an idea about what ingredients we want to use, and we plan the soap around the ingredients we choose. All of our ingredients are unique. For example, we have an apple cider soap we make with locally sourced apple cider. The fragrance, color, and design are all inspired from the use of the apple cider.

It is important to take care of your skin and homemade soap truly is more beneficial than store-bought “soap”. Store-bought “soap” that is commercially made is actually nothing more than detergent. They are filled with artificial, unrecognizable ingredients, and made in large factories. Our soaps use natural, organic ingredients. A natural soap is usually formed by combining animal or plant-based oils and butters that are rich in nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants. The skin loves and needs these ingredients to stay healthy. What you see on the ingredient list is what you get with homemade soap. It is more about the quality, than the quantity with homemade soaps.

In five years, we just want to still be having fun and enjoying the soap making process. It is a hobby and we enjoy making the soaps. We hope that others come to appreciate and enjoy our products as well.

This will be our first time participating in an Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show and we are looking forward to a wonderful show! Find us on Facebook@MilkSuds or e-mail us at milk.suds@yahoo.com

We Are Just Around The Corner Cincy!

Meet Deb Sturdevant from...
I am passionate about color and design. I studied both fashion and interior design in college, along with getting my healthcare degrees and certifications. I ran my own clothing design and alterations business since I was 16 years old but have had many and varied artistic interests and pursuits during my lifetime. From fiber artist, interior designer, clothing and wearable art designer, liturgical vestment and parament designer, to fabricating and designing polymer clay jewelry (my current love).
My inspirations are, first and foremost, everything I see, feel and experience. I have a passion for color and design. Sometimes thoughts and planning of my next creation keep me awake at night! I use color and design from numerous sources as inspirations for my necklaces. For example, I may see a piece of artwork, a piece of fabric, or an article of clothing that inspires my design. I transfer that inspiration into polymer clay. I also incorporate glass beads, gemstones and Swarovski crystals into many of my designs. My creations are all unique and the owners can boast of having a one of a kind piece of polymer clay art jewelry.
Crafting and creating art came naturally to me. As a child, I was always involved in art projects. I
attended 12 years of art classes at the Toledo Museum of art, learning about different mediums. I would describe my creative process as fluid and natural, but sometimes instantaneous. I am a visual thinker and when designs pop into my head I then sketch those images so that I can continue to develop my design. I would like being an artist to be my full-time retirement career. The thought of leaving my art behind as part of my legacy appeals to me. Life is too short - don’t be afraid of color and design! Dare to accessorize your wardrobe and home with a unique piece of art that speaks to you.

Meet Greg Enslen, Author of 27 Titles...
I'm an author based in Dayton, Ohio. I've written twenty-seven books, including four books in the “Frank Harper Mysteries” series and three other novels. I also write original screenplays and guides for popular TV shows such as “Game of Thrones” and “Mr. Robot.” I live in southern Ohio with my wife, three children, three dogs and an indeterminate number of cats. My interests include travel, reading, film and television, and yelling at various sports franchises. I enjoy writing late at night, after everyone else has finally trudged off to bed and the house is quiet.
I've been writing all my life, finishing my first book, Black Bird, in 1993. It was an arduous process, getting that published, but in 2010, I got back into writing full time after closing a business. Now I'm writing all the time-it's crazy. I really get my inspiration from the world around me, including lots of tiny little interactions that probably would mean very little to anyone else. I heard somewhere that writers are professional observers, and I'd have to agree with that--many times, I hear or see something that makes me think, and I jot it down in my notebook or on some random scrap of paper to squirrel away for later.
I read a lot of great books when I was younger and always wondered what it would be like to tell stories like that. At some point, I remembers specifically reading "The Stand" by Stephen King, and that book showed me what could be accomplished, if you took the time and made the effort. I have a whole list of things I'm working on, and try to prioritize whatever is most interesting to me at the time. I do a lot of research before I start writing. I think it's important to be confident about what you are writing, and that comes from researching a topic or location.
My books tend to be hopeful-bad things may happen to characters, but usually the good and just win out over the bad folks. I'm drawn to stories that tell a tale in an interesting way, and tend to avoid stories that just exist for their own sake or are pushing some kind of agenda. In my experience, agenda-driven stories are just that: about the agenda first, then a good story second. And often the story aspects suffer. That being said, I try to incorporate a theme in each fiction work, and I try to come up with an interesting take on it. I hope to continue writing, really, until my eyes go. Of course, by then, maybe we'll have robot eyes. Who knows.

Meet Tracy Macmorine from...
Hi, I'm Tracy Macmorine, originally from northern OH. I started my business one year ago, just wrapping gifts. When January hit I added gift baskets and retail items, and started crafting over the summer in preparation for Halloween and Christmas sales. To develop my and grow my business I took part in the Aviatra Explore Small Business Accelerator program, numerous SCORE workshops and have had guidance from a SCORE Mentor.
My grandmother was seriously into crafting and making, and most of my birthday or holiday gifts from her involved some sort of crafting kit.  I spent a number of summers with her, in AZ, and she had me making all sorts of things alongside her, that she would sell at her church bazaar: angels made from palm fronds, baby dolls made from baby socks, patchwork quilt skirts, and one summer we scouted old trunks from flea markets and refinished them. For me, this creative work is a way of focusing, I'll get a spark of an idea and boom! Tunnel vision while my imagination investigates, twisting and turning the idea until I reach a point where I have to start playing hands-on.
In five years, I would like to be doing more online sales, have a studio where I can both work and host crafting workshops, with a storefront attached. Although in the short term I still need some sort of day-job, I'm hoping Wrap Artistry can eventually be full time and retirement. A lot what I do is adapting and embellishing something that already exists. I love that I can make something beautiful out of these vines that I've been cutting back for years because they choke out all of the other plants. I love going old school with bar soap, using the technique my grandmother taught me when I was a child to waterproof the image. With my Snowbursts, I love that I can make such a cool thing out of some simple toothpicks. So I guess my mssage would have to do with seeking beauty from the mundane.

Meet Nancy Borchers from Designs by Nancy Leigh...
After many years as a mathematics educator, I found my love of geometry came in handy when designing artistic fun and functional products. Sewing requires accurate measurements and the application of all sorts of geometry concepts. By adding a little artistic twist to various shapes, I have developed a number of items that are fun and useful. I learned to create specialty embroidery about 2 years ago. Since then I have been digitizing my designs and stitching them onto fun and functional products.
The winter show will be my second show. I love working with the Avant-Garde staff as they are dedicated to include excellent artists in their shows. Each item is made to be fun and functional. I begin with an idea, create a pattern for my products (e.g. wallet, gift tag holder, notebook/journal, clutch bag), and digitize a design to be embroidered onto each item.
It is fun to find ways to create items that people can use and enjoy. I especially like to create items that meet a specific need for my clients. My mother taught me to sew when I was only 5 years old. She was always creating a new craft and sharing them with friends and family. Through the years, I learned how to pay special attention to detail and create pieces that are fun and functional. I would like to incorporate “thread painting” into my line of products. These designs would be unique and based on inspirational messages. Each product is designed for folks to enjoy their embroidered treasure while using it every day!
